Petr Melichárek

INTRO

Hello,

My name is Petr Melichárek, and I’ve been making custom luxury knives and jewelry from so-called damascus steel for about 20 years. What started as a hobby became my full-time job in 2012, and since then I’ve been creating in my workshop in a small village near Olomouc, Czech Republic. Right in the heart of Europe 🙂

In the “Jewelry” section – which you’re currently viewing – you can explore things like wedding and engagement rings, pendants, bracelets, or earrings made from stainless damascus steel. If you’d like to take a look at the knives, which are the foundation of my work, please use the knife icon in the top left corner, or return to the main menu by clicking the home icon. Please notice that the website is primarily designed for larger screens. It should work on mobile too, but not everything will display as nicely as it does on a computer or laptop. 🙂

The history of damascus steel goes far back into the past, and there are several more or less precise interpretations of what true damascus is supposed to look like. Today, the term is commonly used for layered steel, made through a complex process of forging thin sheets of various steel types, folding them together, and then forge-welding them in a furnace. The resulting material is then further shaped by forging, pressing, twisting, or grinding – depending on the desired pattern and properties. The final product reveals a wide variety of beautiful patterns after being dipped in acid, which etches each type of steel at a different rate and creates a tangible surface texture of the damascus pattern.

Simply put, damascus steel consists of individual “layers” of different types of steel, forge-welded together into one solid piece. For jewelry making, stainless damascus steel is used – a material that is very difficult to produce under regular workshop conditions. That’s why most jewelers prefer the Swedish material Damasteel. I use it for making rings as well, even though I’m capable of producing my own stainless damascus. It’s top-tier in its category, made using powder metallurgy, which ensures a flawless final material. At the same time, it offers extreme corrosion resistance and is generally considered hypoallergenic. If you’d like to learn more about this material, please visit the Ring Guide section, where I go into more detail about the properties of stainless damascus steel.

Although I originally studied at a high school focused on sciences and humanities, the process of making damascus steel and working with it fascinated me so much that it became a lifelong passion – and eventually my profession.

In the different sections of this website, you’ll find galleries of various damascus steel products, photos from the workshop, and even a guide on how to choose and measure rings correctly. Most of my pieces are custom-made and created upon prior agreement. Some jewelry that doesn’t require precise sizing – such as pendants or earrings – is sometimes available in stock, and I can send you photos of the current pieces on request.

If you have any questions or are interested in placing an order, feel free to send me a message or give me a call! I’ll be happy to go over everything with you, explain the details, and help you choose –no stress, no pressure – just an easy chat. English is not a problem 🙂

In the “Contact” section, you’ll find several ways to reach me. I hope your visit to this website will be inspiring, that you’ll enjoy your time here, and maybe one day we’ll meet and work on a jewelry project together.

I also appreciate any support in the form of following my social media or sharing my posts. Thanks!  PM
